Some must reads on white-tailed deer history | Farm and Dairy – The …

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 16, 2012 at 7:48 am

Over time, many hunters develop an expertise about certain species. For some it’s waterfowl; for others turkeys are the obsession.

But for many, if not most, it’s the white-tailed deer. Such expertise comes from years of field experience. It’s much more than getting into the woods a few weeks each November.

It comes from becoming a student of the animal. The most successful hunters learn to think like deer because they understand how deer live. Unfortunately few hunters can study deer full-time.

So it’s nice to know there are references available from which to glean white-tail natural history. Some are classics. This is the time of year to keep a book by a favorite chair and do a little homework every night.

Early book

One of the first and best of these references was The Deer of North America, edited by Walter Taylor (1956, Stackpole, 668 pages). It opens with a fascinating chapter on the interactions of deer, Native Americans and early pioneers.

The rest of the book details our understanding of deer through the early 1950s. Any biologist who studied wildlife management in the 1960s probably owns this book. The George Reserve Deer Herd, by Dale McCullough (1979, University of Michigan Press, 271 pages), describes the population biology of a deer herd confined within a two-square-mile fence.

It is a more difficult read with lots of supporting equations, graphs, and tables. But I’m unaware that such a controlled study has ever been replicated, so it’s worth the slog.

White-tailed Deer: Ecology and Management, edited by Lowell Halls (1984, Stackpole, 870 pages), is encyclopedic in its breadth of coverage, but thousands of research papers about white-tails have been published since 1984.

Different chapters. However, its treatment of the history of white-tailed deer in North America is excellent. Chapters on behavior and nutrition give hunters a glimpse into the life of white-tails. Seven chapters detail management practices, from capture techniques and immobilization methods to habitat management and the care of captive white-tails.

And the chapter on predation, written by legendary wolf biologist L. David Mech, explains how deer endure despite an impressive list of predators.

The Rut: the Spectacular Fall Ritual of North American Horned and Antlered Animals by Ron Spomer (1996, Willow Creek Press, 155 pages) is a lavishly illustrated and popular treatment of what is probably the most talked about aspect of big game mammals.

Every outdoor writer who uses the terms “antler” and “horn” casually and interchangeably should study this book. After a summary chapter on these bony ornaments, Spomer treats white-tails and mulies, as well as pronghorn, mountain goats, elk, sheep, caribou, bison, moose and musk ox.

Biology and management

That brings us to the recent publication of Biology and Management of White-tailed Deer edited by David Hewitt (2011, CRC Press, 686 pages, $119.95). It is an instant classic that updates our knowledge and understanding of the most studied large mammal in the world.

Though priced out of the casual wildlife enthusiast’s budget, this tome will be purchased, read, and studied by wildlife biologists and managers, outdoor writers, and the most avid deer hunters. It deserves space on the shelves of every Pennsylvania public library and deer camp.

Deer management

Hewitt has assembled the work of 35 white-tail experts. The book covers white-tail anatomy, physiology, nutrition, population dynamics, and ecology across its range from central Canada to South America. It also reviews the history of management of white-tailed deer, from early Native Americans through restocking efforts in the mid 1900s, and more recent deer population spikes that are increasingly difficult to manage.

As a source of information, Biology and Management of White-tailed Deer will be invaluable for years to come.

But, the binding is poor (I had to return the first copy I received), it contains only black and white photos, and it is grossly overpriced. It does come with a CD of all color photos includes in the book, but the reader needs a computer to view the photos while reading the book.

The use of the CD should reduce the price of the book by at least 50 percent. It’s a real stain on a terrific source of information.

Trout Unlimited MadDog Chapter Launches … – Extreme Elk Hunting

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 15, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Trout Unlimited’s MadDog Chapter announces year two of their fly fishing camp for Vermont teens ages 13 to 16.  Teens interested in either learning the art of fly-fishing or improving their basic skill level along side some of Vermont’s most accomplished fly anglers, are invited to apply.  The 2012 camp is scheduled for Sunday June 24th through Thursday June 28th at Quimby Country Lodge & Cottages, in Averill, Vermont.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry supports TU’s educational efforts.

“A camp experience dedicated to educating our next generation of fly fishermen and women will help ensure that our precious cold water fisheries here in Vermont will be taken care of well into the future,” said Berry.

Willem Lange visited the camp last year for some fly fishing and storytelling. “For a kid who loves fishing – or even thinks he might – this is a terrific opportunity, a giant leap forward. To fly fish for trout at a classic fishing camp on a pristine northern pond, with instruction in stream ecology and fly fishing techniques by seasoned older members of Trout Unlimited, seems to me like a dream come true.  I wish it had come along sixty years earlier,” says Lange.

Participants in the 5 day/4 night comprehensive program will learn and practice casting, basic fly tying, knot craft, insect identification and imitation (entomology), fish identification and behavior (ichthyology) safe wading techniques, angling ethics and coldwater conservation. Campers will hone their skills on local lakes, ponds and streams, including the Connecticut River.

Our host, Quimby Country, (www.quimbycountry.com) has been in continuous operation since 1894.  Located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom on Forest Lake and Great Averill Pond, Quimby’s is a short 15-minute drive from the Connecticut River.

Prospective campers are encouraged to apply no later than April 15, 2012 to secure a spot for this year’s program.  The cost for the 5-day camp is $425.  Scholarships may be available on an “as-needed” basis.

Trout Unlimited is a non-profit organization that has dedicated over 50 years to the conservation, protection and restoration of North America’s cold-water fisheries and watersheds.

For complete information about the TU Fly Fishing Camp, go to www.vermonttroutcamp.com or e-mail Ray Daigle, camp director, at vermonttroutcamp@gmail.com, or call Ray at 802-793-2819.

Don't Let Your Age Hold You Back When Job Hunting …

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 15, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Although there are laws on the books to protect workers 40 and over from being discriminated against, that does not mean such illegal practices don’t take place during the background screening process.

As a worker who is 40 or over, do you know your rights, along with what to look for when job hunting? If the answer to both matters is no, then take the time to research your rights so that you are not denied a job, especially given today’s troubling economy.

For the older worker, they bring a plethora of qualities to the interview and position if hired that simply should not be overlooked. Among which are:

  • The experience factor – Older workers have been there and done that so to speak. They can be beneficial to any company, especially younger ones who are looking to get a strong foothold in the business world. With their experience, they can offer advice and knowledge that someone just out of college simply can’t;
  • Determination to succeed – While there are certainly some older workers who need a refresher course in how to be a productive employee, most bring a work regimen that is second to none. They know the meaning of showing up on time, giving 100 percent, mentoring younger workers, and will be more likely to remain on hand with the company for a longer period of time;
  • Connections to others – The older worker has also been around and networked during his or her career. That being said, your business can lean on them to utilize their contacts and open possible doors for sales, marketing and more. This can be an invaluable tool as you look to expand operations.

If you’re an older worker who is currently interviewing for a job, keep several factors in mind:

  • Salary isn’t everything – Many of us over 40 have had to alter our work habits over time. We have also had to accept taking lesser wages in order to get back in the working world following a layoff, etc. If you find yourself interviewing for jobs that pay less than you’re used to, weigh the pros and cons of taking the position if offered. You may be disappointed in the salary, but remember that job offers do not come along each and every day. You can always take a lesser paying job to hold you over until you find what you are looking for;
  • Sharpen your technology skills – One thing that can work against an older employee in today’s technologically-driven world is not being up to speed on such skills. If it has been a while since you’ve sharpened your computer skills or the job you’re applying for requires certain talents like photo shop, Dreamweaver, etc. look into taking a course at a local college so your skill level does not work as a detriment to you;
  • Don’t be afraid to compete – There is a perception among some older workers that they cannot compete with younger rivals who are more likely to accept less money, more than likely are up to speed on computer skills, and are not set in their ways. If you find yourself feeling this way, change that feeling at once. Leverage your experience when fighting for a job. Don’t be afraid to highlight what you can bring to a position, however do it in a proper tone and not one of arrogance. Competition should spur you on to go after a job, not deter you.

The bottom line is that while your chronological age is not under your control, how you act is.

If you feel like you’re too old, don’t have the skill set and will not be a good fit for the company, chances are you won’t get the job.

On the other hand, if you feel younger than you are, put your experience to work for you and carry a positive attitude into each and every interview, chances are you won’t be interviewing for too long.

Maltese Hunters Legally Massacre Egypt's Protected Birds (Video …

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 15, 2012 at 7:46 am

BirdLife Malta, Maltese Hunters, wildlife Conservation, animal conservation, birds, Egypt, hunting, Lake NasserIn the video below the jump, Maltese hunters are depicted shooting Eagles, Falcons, Vultures and other protected bird species.

The Avian Influenza outbreak had at least one positive outcome in Egypt: it kept both local and migratory birds safe from hunters. But last year in December the government re-opened the country to what seems to be a permanent hunting season without any kind of regulatory oversight, leaving Maltese hunters and others free to conduct wild killing sprees that frequently result in the deaths of untold numbers of birds.

This video was released by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) to raise awareness of what one conservationist called “crazy fanatics” from Malta, who aren’t hunting as much as they’re slaughtering even endangered species.

Hope reversed?

Mindy Baha El Din, an American conservationist who married a renowned Egyptian Ornithologist, is a tireless activist for animal rights in Egypt. When Arwa interviewed her last year she expressed hope that the revolution would usher in an era of improved protection for the country’s precious biodiversity, but so far it seems that almost the opposite is taking place.

Although progress has been made in Hurghada, the scene of the country’s very first dolphin sanctuary, and Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) is taking to task restaurants that serve illegal sharks and other marine creatures, the lawlessness that has seeped into every aspect of Egyptian society has affected its wildlife as well.

A surge in hunting trips

After the government made bird hunting legal again, a host of tour companies have been offering “dream” duck hunting tours and other trips with “experienced hunters.”

Royal Dream Tours will take as few as one person on trips that last up to four days through Cairo, Fayoum, and Binyusef. They note in their online literature that everyday is good since “hunting season is open now.” Hunting trips with Wadi Tours last as many as seven days.

But Mindy’s husband Sherif told Egypt Independent earlier this year that it’s not possible to have a hunting season when there are no rules in place to guide hunters’ conduct. As a result, no one is available to mitigate the kind of free-for-all depicted in this video.

Pelicans, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis, Egyptian Vultures and Osprey are among the birds massacred by jubilant Maltese Famers, along iwth Lanner Falcon and Bonelli’s Eagle, bringing to mind several other recent incidents including thousands of fruit bats gunned down in Lebanon and one million songbirds in Cyprus killed for a pickled dish.

Monitoring the massacre

In response to pleas from Egyptian conservationists, CABS has pledged to monitor the next hunting season. ”We will monitor important rest areas around Lake Nasser for migrant birds on passage,” CABS spokesperson Axel Hirschfeld promised, adding that they “will work closely with local ornithologists and law enforcement agencies.”

Hopefully their presence will deter reckless hunters.

MT: Meeting Montana's Wolf Hunting Quota Unlikely « Timber Wolf …

Posted By: Richard Tan on February 14, 2012 at 6:49 am

MISSOULA COUNTY

By Kevin Maki

MISSOULA, Mont. — The clock is ticking on Montana’s wolf hunt. Fish Wildlife and Parks says it looks like there won’t be enough wolves killed to fill the state quota.

This season, hunters could kill up to 220 wolves. But as of Monday, only 162 wolves had been killed.

Individual quotas have been filled in just three of the 14 different management areas. Fish Wildlife and Parks had scheduled the hunt to end December 31, but extended it to February 15th in an effort to fill the quota.

F.W.P. will review strategies to help meet wolf hunting quotas in the future. It could propose reducing license fees or allowing hunters multiple wolf tags.

When the F.W.P. commission meets Thursday it could decide to extend the wolf hunt in the Westfork area near Darby. “They’re going to be looking at a potential season extension up until April 1st for that area,” said FWP’s Vivaca Crowser, “and there’s a sub quota in that area and right now we’re at a harvest of six of 18.”

Nowhere in Montana has the controversy over wolves been more contentious than the southern Bitterroot Valley. Wolf advocates have been battling ranchers and sportsmen for years. On the streets of Missoula, people are divided on the issue.

“I think if you have a quota to meet you should at least be able to meet it,” said Matt McDaid. “I think if the animals are a nuisance you should be able to take care of that.”

But Carmel Collum of Missoula disagrees. “We need the wolves to take care of the weak and sick part of the elk population to keep it healthy,” said Collum.

Fish Wildlife and Parks is studying elk in the Westfork to get more details about what is affecting the animals. They say wolves are just one part of a larger picture, and they may need to adjust hunting quotas for other predators.

“Mountain lions have been a big part of the picture,” said Crowser, ” which is why we’re looking at potentially a more liberal quota in the Westfork of the Bitterroot.”

But it’s the time of year F.W.P. expects predations by wolves to pick up.
